The great virtue of Namaskar, if done in the proper way (with a sense of surrender accompanied by humble bowing down), is that it's a total surrender of one's ego while greeting the person in front of you. If the greeting is reciprocated the same way, then it's the ultimate experience. But, even if it doesn't, still it's a greet exercise for internal cleansing. In Indian rural traditions, it's often said that namaskar is not for the person in front of you, it's actually for the Supreme Power which created us and which regulates us.
A Wisdom, often shared by Sadguru Jaggi,
whenever someone asked him the Meaning of Namaskar or Namaste. According to Sadguru, the moment you bow down with your palms together before your chest or face, you surrender the human desire to judge the person in front of you. The moment you give away any desire to judge the person, you greet him for his/her soul, which is always divine.
That's why, namaskar is a permanent Fixture at my Yoga Centre, Tapovan, Laxman Jhula, Rishikesh .
